“What’s up?” I repeated.

“They are about to cut my gas for non-payment of gas bill, if they cut my gas I am effectively out of business, my restaurant is going to be closed”.

To cut long story short I sped to the restaurant and rescued him.

The question that needs answering is: what got Mike’s restaurant into that position in the first instant?

The restaurant was located across the road from the main shopping mall and all the stores in the heart of Manchester city centre. If you have ever been to Manchester, you will know that in the weekends, the city centre is packed to capacity.

If you took a walk in Manchester city centre on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon especially in the summer, it would take you nothing less than an hour to walk a meter.

However, despite this high traffic, Mike’s restaurant managed to attract fewer than ten people in a day. Some days even on busy weekend nights, a restaurant with a sitting capacity of 300 will have less than twenty people.

The problem was not the décor. The restaurant was sparkling clean and the décor were of high standard.

It was not the food either, the food was good. The few customers who went there to eat had nothing but high praises for the food.

So if the food, the location or the decors were not the problem, what was the reason why my friends’ restaurant was struggling to the point in which his gas was about to be cut off?

And what was the catalyst that forced him to eventually close shop?

To be quite honest with you, I never knew the answer to the above questions until I witnessed the burial of the Liberian restaurant of another friend of mine.

My friend Besman partnered with another Liberian to establish a Liberian restaurant in London.

Liberian food is unique. It is prepared differently from other African foods. Every country prepare their food differently from other countries. However, there are still some similarities from country to country.

As far as similarities are concern between Liberian food and that of other countries, rice is the only similarity because rice is a staple in most African countries.

And the great thing about the UK is the British people are open to trying food from different countries.

The UK has more foreign restaurants than all other European countries combine. Despite these facts, my friend’s Liberian restaurant failed to attract enough customers. At a point, he was forced to close down.

So if my friend is fortunate to have a restaurant in the UK where the population is predisposed to trying food from other countries…

Another friend of mine Chris has a Latino restaurant also in Manchester city centre. Chris like Mike was a client that later became a friend. The venue is actually a restaurant club therefore at a certain time of the night, they stop selling food and the place is transformed into a nightclub.

When the restaurant turns into a nightclub, customers are charged admission fees. What I observed is he sometimes let people of Latino origin in for free. I always wondered to myself his reasoning behind letting customers of Latino origin into the club without paying.

I know for a fact that most of them do not buy drinks, neither do they buy food. It does not matter how long the queue is, they will jump the queue and just stroll in.

For me it was ridiculous. Here is a group of people who do not pay admission, they do not buy food or drink yet they are given VIP treatment.

As I said previously, Chris is a client but he is also a friend. So in a matter of fact friendly discussion with him one day, I asked him his reasoning behind his ridiculous practice of letting Latinos into the club for free.

He said “they create the atmosphere”.

“Atmosphere what atmosphere” I enquired?

“You see Romeo” he said to me…

“When people visit my restaurant, they do not come here because of the food. It helps that the food is great. But if they desire to eat Latino food, there are lots of Spanish restaurant all over Manchester.

So they do not come here because of the food, they come here because it is the closet they come to being in South America. When someone holds a wedding reception or Hen Party in here, it is not just because they want to eat Spanish food, it is because they want to have the experience of holding their Hen Party in Latin America without actually travelling to Latin America. And these Latinos dancing salsa with them is what creates the feeling of being in Latin America.

If the Brits came in here and there was no salsa dancing going on, the place would not have the Latin feel to it”.

Hum mm…That was a very interesting explanation.

I never saw things that way until he pointed them out to me.

No wonder he has been successful.

No wonder his restaurant has been in existence for almost 20 years when many other restaurants have sprung up and disappeared from the restaurant business landscape.

I wish my friends Mike and Besman knew something about atmosphere, maybe their restaurants will still be alive today…

Especially Mike, if only he knew how to create the right atmosphere in his restaurant that was located in the middle of the city…close to the main shopping district of Manchester city centre, his restaurant would not be rotting in the business grave yard.
