Retail Store Design And Visual Merchandise Display Workshop

Imagine This Scenario…

What If your retail store was jammed packed to capacity every single day of the week?

Imagine This Scenario…

What If you could increase your store sales by 18.7% without spending a single red penny on marketing?

Imagine This Scenario…

What If you could reduce your store shrinkage by 84% in less than 120 days?

Imagine This Scenario…

What If you could have customers flocking to your store because of your beautiful store design and attractive visual merchandise display?

Imagine This Scenario…

What If you could have a shoplifting and employee theft free retail store?

Sound Like A Stretch?

I used to think so too until I saw it happen to many of my clients.

You see…

A few years ago I used to work as a store detective for Marks & Spencer Department Store.

As a store detective I worked at different locations every few days to avoid being recognised by shoplifters.

One day when I arrived for work in one of the stores, while being briefed by the person I was to take over from a couple walked into the store and headed straight for the coat rack.

The female took one of the coats, tried it on and confidently walked passed us.

By the time we realised what was happening and tried to react, it was too late.

They jumped into a waiting get-away vehicle and sped off

I was shocked!

I could not believe what I had just witnessed.

I thought to myself…holy cow!

How can someone do such a thing in broad day light?

But the answer was simple…

They were able to get away with it because the coats were displayed right next to the entrance.

It was a £900 coat.

In one of the stores, Marks & Spencer was sharing the toilet facilities with Sainsbury supermarket.

What shoplifters did was steal from Marks & Spencer, head towards the toilet pass through Sainsbury and escaped.

And they did the same with Sainsbury.

They will steal from Sainsbury, pass through Marks & Spencer and escape.

If we noticed and stopped them, they will claim they were going to the toilet.

Technically they were right so we could not arrest them.

Once in a while, we got lucky… the really dumb ones will steal from us, them while escaping through Sainsbury decide to steal from there too in the process get caught.

We did everything within our powers to get top management to come to grips with the fact that a large percentage of shrinkage in the stores was preventable.

I will argue that 84% of our shrinkage at Marks and Spencer was preventable.

As a retail consultant I have proved this hypothesis many times with my clients.

I have continuously demonstrated to them that 84% of their shrinkage is preventable.

The explanation the store managers gave for placing £900 coats at the entrance of the store was… they wanted to increase sales.

This explanation puzzled me.

I could not understand why the store managers were enduring thousands of pounds worth of losses in the name of increasing sales!

I remember having a conservation with a store manager in London Coney.

Picture this right…

The store in London Coney is literally in the middle of nowhere.

The store had three entrances.

Most of the times there were only two security officers plus me on sight.

There were times when I was the only security personnel in the store.

And in this store, high ticket items were displayed right next to the entrance.

On many occasions, shoplifter will drive close to the entrance dash into the store, grab as much merchandise as they can and jump into a waiting vehicle.

In my conversation with the store manager I informed him that the locations of merchandise made them vulnerable to theft.

His response was he did not make merchandising decisions it came from the head office.

“Why don’t you inform your head office about the losses the store is incurring as a result of the merchandising decisions?”

I asked him.

He responded that the guys at the head office were professionals who knew more about increasing sales better than I did.

I must admit, at the time, i knew nothing about increasing retail sales.

However, although I did not know anything about merchandising or increasing retail sales, I knew instinctively that they were wrong.

There had to be a better way of increasing sales i kept telling myself.

I knew placing £900 coats at the entrance of a store with no security in the name of increasing sales was criminally stupid.

And to add insult to injury at the time Marks and Spencer did not even have EAS alarm at their entrances.

But I had no means of proving my hypothesis at the time.

So when I went into retail consulting, even though I was a loss prevention consultant.

My main focus was to answer the question.

Is it possible to increase retail sales without increasing shrinkage?

After many years of training and consulting some of the most successful retailers in the world, I can say without a single shred of doubt:

YES!

It is indeed possible to increase retail sales without increasing retail shrinkage.

How do you increase retail sales without increasing retail shrinkage?

It can be done when you have a trio of:

  • Good store design
  • An attractive visual merchandise display
  • Effective loss prevention strategy

If all of this sound interesting to you, then you will really benefit from our ‘How to Increase Retail Sales’ home study course.

How to Influence Shoppers Behaviour

The key to increasing you retail store sales is having the ability to influence shopper behaviour.

For the majority of retailers, store design means hiring a handful of builders or carpenters to nock together few shelves.

However, a beautiful store design is more than just about shelves.

In the same token, visual merchandising display is not just about placing merchandise on the store floor.

Good store design and attractive visual merchandising display are first and foremost about a single word that every retail know.

It is a word that is misunderstood by the majority of struggling retailers.

A word that all successful retailers utilise very well…

That word is conversion

Conversion is simply the ability to get someone to take out their wallet and give you money for you merchandise.

Conversion in retail is three things:

  • The ability to get someone to enter your store
  • The ability to retain them for long in the store
  • The ability to persuade them to buy

Most of the times the problem with increasing retail store sales does not lie with getting shoppers into the store.

Depending on your location, you could get as much shoppers as you like to enter your store.

The problem many retailers face is shoppers enter the store and leave without buying.

Why is that the case?

Why do shoppers enter your store and leave without buying?

The reason for that is, you have not deliberately choreograph your sales process.

What do I mean by choreographing your sales process?

A research was done in which it was revealed that 75% of shoppers said they only saw 25% of merchandise on display in retail stores.

Now just think about this.

75% of people entering your store only see 25% of your merchandise.

Just imagine the difference it will make to your sales if instead of your customers seeing only 25% of your merchandise they instead see 75% of your merchandise.

This is what choreographing your conversion process is about.

If you learn how to choreograph your sales process using the best merchandise display strategies, it will ensure your customers see all of the merchandise on display in your store.

You see.

Choreographing your sales pipeline in order to increase your store sales is a three step process:

  • Lead generation: how to get shoppers into your store
  • Lead conversion: how to get them to buy once they are in your store
  • Customer retention: how to ensure they return after the first purchase

There are strategies and tactics for getting each of these steps right.

The reason Marks & Spencer placed £900 coats at the entrance of their store in the name of increasing sales is their senior management did not know those specific strategies and tactics for increasing their store sales without risking their profit margin.

And nine years after I left Marks & Spencer, they are still struggling to make profit.

As I write this text, Next has recently surpass them in terms of profit.

As a retail consultant, I constantly encounter the Marks & Spencer syndrome in many retail organisations, large, medium size or small.

This is the reason I created the ‘How to Increase Retail Sales’ home study course, to help retailers like you develop the right strategy and tactics for increasing your store sales and profit.

When someone enters your retail store and you ask them, ‘can I help you’?

What is the usual response?

‘No thanks…I am just browsing’

They are not just browsing.

The reality is, a large percentage of those people entered your store because something about the store caught their attention.

It could have been your store design or the merchandise on display.

Naturally people don’t like to be sold but they like to buy.

Therefore, the moment they are asked, ‘can I help you’?

Their naturally instinct is, if they said yes…they are going to be sold something they might not want to buy.

Which is one of the reason the ‘How to Increase Retail Sales with Store Design, Visual Merchandise Display and Loss Prevention’ system was created to help retailers like you overcome those types of buying resistance.

Many retailers continue to make the serious mistake of underestimating the difficulty of getting shoppers to part with their hard earn money.

Online retailers such as Amazon, eBay or iTune have entire departments with hundreds of staff whose only task is to focus on their conversion process.

They have their staff analysing the activities of each and every customer to their sites.

Do you still wonder why those guys are eating the lunch of brick and mortar retailers?

They understand the significant of conversion to retailing.

You might think to yourself, it is easy for them to do online.

That level of conversion tracking cannot be done in a retail stores.

Wrong!

It can be done.

There are formulae for conducting Amazon like analysis in your retail store to understand your customers buying habits in order to influence their choices.

In the ‘How to Increase Retail Sales with Store Design, Visual Merchandise Display and Loss Prevention’ home study course, I walk you through a step by step process for monitoring and analysing the activities of customers in your store so you can tweak your sales process to better appeal to them and increase your conversion rate.

Just think how different a conversion outcome Victor Secret or La Senza will have if when a woman enter their store instead of their staff asking the same stupid question…’can I help you’?…

Which will only result in the answer, ‘no I am just browsing’…

They ask instead: are you looking for something for a special occasion?

Would you like me to show you the best lingerie for someone of your shape, skin tone and look?

And the store assistant proceed to explain to her the different types of lingerie that will look nice on her.

Why a certain type of bra shapes fits her breast and cleavage better.

How a particular type of thong enhances her shape…bla…bla…bla.

Do you think after going through that exercise with ten customers, they will not be able to close at least five out of every ten customer they interact with?

And even be able to upsell them?

The use of technologies such as the magic mirror or footfall counters are other ways of bringing online conversion process to brick and mortar retailing.

There are various other ways brick and mortar retailers can apply online conversion strategies to their retail stores.

Those strategies form part of the ‘How to Increase Retails Sales with Store Design, Visual Merchandise Display and Loss Prevention’ home study course.

The reasons you are not attracting shoppers to your retail store, worse of all, the reason they do not buy when they enter your store might have nothing to do with what you think the problem is.

The reason shoppers are not coming to your store has nothing to do with online shopping, your location or bad luck.

It most likely has to do with your Store design, visual merchandise display and loss prevention strategy.

The ‘How to Increase Retail Sales with Store Design, Visual Merchandising Display and Loss Prevention’ training system was specifically designed to teach retailers like you the art and science of:

  • Designing a beautiful store
  • Creating an attractive visual display

The art and science of designing a beautiful retail store and creating an attractive visual merchandise display is about understanding one simple but fundamental truth, that truth is: human nature is the only constant.

What do I mean by human nature is the only constant?

What I mean is this.

Human nature has not changed since the days of Caesar.

We all buy emotionally but justify our decision logically.

This is the simple truth that Amazon, eBay, iTune and all successful retailers understand which fail and struggling retailers do not understand.

Every single human being, whether it is the president of the United States, the prime minister of the United Kingdom Or ordinary Joe the plumber, they all do things for three reasons and three reasons alone:

  • Sex
  • Status
  • Survival

Do you have a problem believing this theory?

Let me ask you this question:

Which newspaper has the highest circulation of any English newspaper in the world?

Like a few minutes to guess?

It is The Sun.

British tabloid The Sun has the highest circulation of any English newspaper in the world.

Cosmopolitan magazine is the highest circulated English language women’s magazine in world.

What does The Sun and Cosmo have in common?

Their front pages is always cover with naked women.

The majority of the times Cosmo headline and article has something to do with sex.

Why is The Sun and Cosmo headlines, articles and images constantly packed with information about sex?

They know that sex sells.

They understand that in the final analysis all of our buying decisions are based upon emotions.

So as a retailer, you when you are thinking about your store design and visual merchandising display, you cannot attempt to go against the natural order of things.

You need to ride on the wave of tried and tested human behaviour influence principles.

In ‘How to Increase Retails Sales’ Home study course, I walk you through the process of infusing emotions into your store design and visual merchandising display.

Here is my book review on Amazon:

The book is so well-written with many examples and references. Store design mechanism and the fundamentals are enclosed nicely in this book. It is such a well-organized reference book for retailers. Any retailer who is serious about understanding how to design their store need to read it, they will surely benefit from it. Recommended!

Why Is This Different From Other Retail Trainings?

I know you might have attended lots of different retail training, read books and maybe bought other training and home study courses

Those training, books and courses might not have delivered the promised results.

So naturally you might want to know how is ‘How to Increase Retail Sale with Store Design, Visual Display and Loss Prevention’ different from any other retail home study course?

That’s a legitimate question.

For a start, it is the only retail training system to ever combine:

  • Store design
  • Visual merchandising display
  • Loss prevention

Secondly, it was created specifically for the small to medium size retailer who cannot afford to employ expensive visual merchandiser or hire a store design or merchandising agency.

Thirdly, it is the only retail training to ever combine the physical, logical and emotion into the process of increasing retail sales.

What other retail trainings and books miss is the human animal is a simply complex being.

Without a proper understanding of the simple complexity of the human animal, it is difficult to serve them effectively.

You cannot attract customers into your store or persuade them to buy your merchandise if you do not understand their thought process.

Why Should You Listen To Me?

Who am I and why should you listen to me?

I am the author of 21 books including the bestselling book:

  • How to increase retail sales with store design and visual merchandise display
  • How to make profit in retail
  • Store design blueprint
  • Visual merchandise display
  • 84%: The most effective retail profit protection strategies

And eight other retail books.

I have also author books in other business genre as diverse as: dentistry, accounting, law and private medical practice.

However, what I really bring to the table is practical experience.

I am not a college professor, which seem to be the source of many retail consultants.

Neither am I a recovering retailer.

I have worked in the retail industry, the security industry, trained and consulted many of the most successful retailers in the world.

I bring two things to the table that probably no other retail consultant and trainer has in the UK:

Practical experience as a result of working, training and consulting the best retailers in the world.

Furthermore, I am a business growth and marketing consultant to other industries.

As a result, I bring fresh and different perspective to the subject of increasing retail sales.

However, the most valuable thing you will learn from me is my marketing expertise.

I was trained by few of the best marketing and business coaches in the world.

My system is based upon proven marketing and sales strategies that have been tried, tested and implemented by the best marketing experts in the world.

My strategies work because they are those that have been applied by the most successful retailers in the world.

Here is my book review on Amazon:

Achieving a well-organized store demands a good store design and visual merchandise display. A well-organized store help shoppers appreciate the beauty of your store serving as a magnet to pull them in. When your store design and visual merchandise display are attractive, they draw shoppers into your store. This is what I got from this book I am sure you will get the same.

What Determines the Price of a Product?

Have you ever wondered why shoppers pass by your store and go to your competitor?

Why are some retailers able to sell the same crappy made in china products ten times the price it is sold for in your store?

You were taught in retail training that the price of a product is determined by the cost of bringing that product to the market.

It’s a lie!

The price of a product is not determined by the cost of bringing that product to the marketplace.

The price of a product is determined by:

Who is buying and how it is sold to them

Rolex watches do not tell time better than other watches.

Neither is it more costly to bring a Rolex watch into the market.

Yet the cheapest Rolex cost more than ten times the price of its nearest competitor.

Why?

Because of who it is sold to and how it is sold

Would you like to learn how to sell the merchandise in your store ten times the price they are sold for in your competitors’ stores?

Would you like to learn how to design your store to attract truckload of shoppers?

Would you like to learn how to create an attractive visual merchandise display?

Here is my book review on Amazon:

Store design blueprint was impressively written by the author. It focused not only on design store, but also on other key issues relating to store design. Key topics such as: why is it important to design your store well, how to go about designing a store and how store design result in a profitable store

When I was conducting research for my books, I visited Harrods.

I have heard a lot about Harrods, but had not actually visited it.

You can imagine my anticipation and apprehension at visiting one of the most famous retail stores where royalties, Hollywood A-list stars and the “who is who” from around the world go to shop.

In my mind, everything in Harrods was made of gold.

I even bought a special outfit for the occasion to ensure I was in sync with the royalties and A-list stars.

I was hoping I could catch a glimpse of Roman Abramovich and some of his billionaire friends or some Saudi prince.

However, instead of some Russian oligarch or Middle Eastern Sheikh, what caught my attention was a toy bus.

I had bought the identical bus for my son from ASDA.

It was the same bus in the same packaging.

An odd question popped into my mind when I noticed the bus:

Why is it that the same bus, in the same packaging, probably made by the same people in the same factory in China, being sold in Harrods for almost three times the price it was sold for in ASDA?

Answer:

ASDA sells toy bus.

Harrods sells classy toy bus even if it is made in the same factory in China.

There is a difference.

That difference is what you are going to be learning when you invest in the ‘How to Increase Retail Sales with Store Design, Visual Merchandise Display and Loss Prevention’ home study course.

What shoppers buy from Harrods is not the crappy made in China bus.

What they buy is the experience of buying the bus.

What they pay for is:

  • The beautiful store design
  • The attractive visual merchandise display
  • The exceptional customer service they receive from the sales assistants

My ultimate goal is that at the end of your experience with the ‘How to Increase Retail Sales’ home study course, you will be able to create a Harrods like experience in your store.

Retail Store Design And Visual Merchandise Display Workshop

Here is my book review on Amazon:

I always felt that all I needed to do was display my goods on my shop floor and customers will enter and buy them. It never occurred to me that the act of presenting my goods to prospective customers is itself marketing. It never even occurred to me that I had to market my goods to my customers. So reading visual merchandise display was an eye opener for me. I now know that my sales and store profit is connected to my ability to display my goods well. I learnt lots of new terminologies and ways of visually displaying my goods. Thanks Romeo
