I am losing it or something, why would I say branding is bad for a small business?
Probably 99.9% of marketing agencies sell their clients branding. The core message of the majority of marketing agencies is: we can help you get your name out there.
However, does branding really work?
The answer is yes and no.
Yes if you are McDonalds or Nike and have billions to spend on advertising.
No if you are a small to medium size business.
If you don’t believe me, go out of your immediate circle and ask people if they know the biggest names in your industry.
You will be shocked to know that if there was a survey done, a lots of people will not know who Richard Branson is.
When you are in a certain niche, you think to yourself everyone else in the world know the people you know. It’s always a shock when people go out of their circle to realise what other people do not know.
Why did I bring this point?
I made this point to say that branding is an expensive business. Lots of businesses and individuals have spent millions to brand themselves and yet they are not known outside of their immediate circle.
As a small business, your best bet is direct response marketing.
